Julia James, Junior Since joining the publicity committee for Catholic Underground, I have felt much more closely connected with the John Paul 2 Newman Center. Each time our team gets together to promote the monthly event, the magnitude of work that we are called to do on this campus becomes clearer to me. Knowing that a majority of the student population at UIC is Catholic, we feel compelled to work hard reaching out to as many students as we can, so that, by providing an avenue for fellowship, we may help bring our peers closer to the Church. Catholic Underground provides students with the opportunity to attend Eucharistic adoration by candlelight in the Chapel. This foretaste of Heaven, combined with enchanting music by our choir, is an inexplicably holy experience. It is amazing to see how many students unite in prayer even during such times as now when our faith is being tested. Praise and worship follows, led by live Catholic bands that come in each month; they have been invaluable in drawing students to the Newman center and all that it has to offer to help them grow spiritually. Their inspirational music sends positive messages not just about our faith but also life in general. As a student, I have immensely enjoyed CU, and as a promoter for it, I have come to appreciate all the hard work the Newman Center puts into bringing students closer to Christ.
